Printing E/R Diagram

You can print any E/R diagram to a printer or to PDF file.

Printing to a printer

  1. Make sure that print grid is displayed on your diagram and printer settings, such as page orientation, page size, margin sizes, etc., are set correctly. You can change the page settings using Diagram -> Diagram Options top-level menu and pressing page Setup button in the Display Options tab.

  2. Zoom out the diagram using Zoom Out button on the diagram toolbar until you can see multiple printable pages and make sure that the diagram's layout fits to a print grid. If there are some objects that are located on the print page breaks, use mouse drag-and-drop operations to move them to a different diagram pages. You can move single or multiple objects as well as connector lines. To select multiple objects that are closely located, drag a rectangular area that covers all required objects and all objects to select them. After that you can drag all selected objects to a new location. To select multiple objects that are not closely located, use CTRL+Click mouse operation. To select a connector line, click on this line. To select an object, click on that object box.

  3. After you satisfied with the diagram layout, choose File -> Print top-level menu to open Print dialog box. In the Print dialog box, choose if you want to include page numbers to a print output and also select, if you want to print an entire diagram or only selected pages. To print selected pages, choose Specify Pages Manually radio button and enter page numbers that you want to print. If you want to print multiple pages, type page numbers as a comma-separated list.  Use Print Preview control in order to see individual diagram page numbers.

Printing to a PDF file

  1. Right-mouse click on a diagram area that does not contain an object box or connector line. The diagram popup menu will open.
  2. Choose Print to PDF from the popup menu. The Save dialog box will open.
  3. Enter the file name for output PDF file.
Please notice the diagram will be saved in PDF file as a single page document. If you need to break a diagram to multiple pages, use Printing to Printer operation. Also saving to PDF file does not create a reusable Server Studio JE diagram object. If you want to be able to re-use the E/R diagram later or pass it to a different Server Studio JE user, save it as XML document using File -> Save menu. Diagrams, saved as XML files, can be resynchronized with a current database state at any time. PDF files can only be used for viewing and printing using Adobe PDF File Reader.
